So, last Friday I had appointments for both Mango and Casey to go to the Vet for their annual shots. I was stressed out about it for two reasons:
1. I went to this Vet a few months ago because Mango had earmites. She'd had them for a little bit longer than was ideal, but for a while I was in denial because she'd been treated for earmites not that long ago and I had NO IDEA where she could have gotten them. Once the denial wore off, it took a little while to work going to the vet into my schedule. I took her to the vet that was closest to my new location and they were very rude to me.
They had all these signs up about Project Alley Cat or something weird like that. I think it was something about how it was cool for cats to be feral, and we evil people should not try to tame them. I have never seen signs like that up in a vet's before. My vets have always been cool with having indoor only cats, because they live longer, have fewer diseases, and are often better loved. The new vet was obviously a different story. They immediately disliked me. I assume it's because my cats are indoor only. Or because Mango's earmites went too long without treatment. Or because under "Type of Food:" I put down "Dry cat food" because I couldn't remember the brand name... even though it is actually the organic no "processed chicken product" stuff that costs twice as much as regular. If I had put the brand down, they probably would still have disapproved because I am probably only supposed to feed them live mice.
Okay, I'm getting off topic. The vet was very pissy with me. I asked if I should bring my other cat in and they said yes, he probably had earmites. I told them that his ears were very clean and they seemed like they were getting confused (because everyone thinks Mango is a boy) and thinking I was saying Mango's ears were clean. I decided I better bring Casey in to be safe. When I walked into the examining room and the vet saw me she literally said "Ooooh, it's you." Mean horrible evil vet.
2. So, you say, why would I go back to this horrible vet? When I moved with Casey (a 25 minute drive) he pooped and barfed in his carrier. When I took him to the vet (a 10 minute drive), he pooped on the way there and barfed on the way back. I figured out that he gets kinda car sick. So, a long car drive to another vet didn't seem very appealing. Despite my better judgement, I decided to schedule their shots with the same crappy vet.
The night before, I took up their food, hoping it would stop Casey from pooping. The morning of, I went to put Mango in the carrier, and she was hissing like a cougar and going crazy and I was literally scared of her. To make matters worse, as soon as I picked her up, Casey started trying to attack her and she'd run away again. I finally got them both to the vet. Casey still pooped on the way there, but this time it was more like diarrhea, since I hadn't taken up their water.
The vet was really weird. They finished the exams for both Mango and Casey in less than 10 minutes. They pretty much weighed them, gave them a pill, then gave them a shot and that was it. Normally, when I get Mango back home she calms down. This time, when I let her out, she was still hissing and hiding from Casey. I decided to let her be and left her alone while I tuned my banjo and played it for the first time in about 2 years. That's why I didn't hear Mango barfing. I noticed she had something white on her chin. When I got closer to her I noticed a puddle of barf that was really just watery with the mucousy yellow stuff in it. Then I found another spot and another. Six spots in all. I called mom and asked her what she thought. She agreed it wasn't normal. Mango had been acting a little bit despondent before I took her to the vet, but nothing like this. I noticed that they gave her a deworming pill, even though she has never had worms, they didn't say she had them this time, and they didn't even test her poop like every other vet I've ever been to. I really didn't want to call the vet. I finally decided to call her old vet in Dawsonville, because I'd really liked them.
They agreed that I should bring her in. Once again, cougar sounds and scary Mango as I tried to get her in her carrier. I was really upset, too, because I've had her 4 years and she'd never been really sick before. I got her to the vet (30 minutes away) and she had a temp and was realy puffy by then. Her ears were also bright red. The nice vet didn't think it was the evil vet's fault, but I think she's just nice. She thought Mango was just a little sick to start with and the vaccines pushed her over the edge. She decided to keep her for a couple hours to monitor her. I know it isn't that traumatic, but I was tramatized. When I went to pick her up she was doing much better, though. I've been having to give her anti-biotics twice a day, but she's been doing pretty good.
A couple days ago she started acting kinda hissy again and I got freaked out. She was nosing around her carrier and I thought she was having flashbacks or something. Turns out there was a mouse. Did she kill it? No, she ran and hid. The mouse ran and hid, too. Under my computer desk. For all I know it is still there. Which is why I am writing this (the world's longest cat blog ever) with my feet up on the chair.
Cat lover out!
