Stolen Wallet

So, I got an automated call from one of my credit card companies last night, asking about possible fraudulent activities. I was just going to call the number on my card instead of the number they left in the message, but when I looked for it, my whole wallet was missing. This is when I realized I should be worrying. I'm not sure exactly what happened, but my guess is that it fell out of my purse and an enterprising thief snatched it up.

So, I called one of my other credit card companies and my bank (debit card and check card). Neither of them had any activity. Meanwhile, Todd called the police. The police officer showed up before I had a chance to call my third credit card company (Target). He took my information and my statement and all that. So far, the only charges that had shown up were $35 at a gas station and $95 at Big Lots, which I believe had been rejected. I'm guessing someone at Big Lots caught on to suspicious activity, because otherwise I'm not sure how the credit card company knew something was off. I've never spent that much at Big Lots, but it's not unthinkable.

After the cop left, I called Target. I didn't get off work until 9:00, so this is like 11:00 at night. There was a charge of $265 made with my Target card at the Target store. The guy I talked to on the phone acted all weird about it, like he didn't believe I hadn't made the charge. He said he'd blocked my card, but I'd have to talk to the fraud department about the $265. He "transferred" me, but after two minutes, came back on the line. "The fraud department is closed," he said, telling me I'd have to call back in the morning. I asked for a direct phone number, since it had taken me forever to get through to a live person. He gave me a number. I asked what their hours were and he said, "Normal business hours- 7 to 5." So, the fraud department had been closed for over 6 hours when he put me on hold for them. I guess I should feel grateful it only took him a couple minutes to figure it out.

I called the number he gave me this morning, it gave me the option to enter an extension. Since I didn't know an extension, I didn't enter one. Then it hung up on me. I called back through the system and finally got through to the fraud department. The fraud department lady told me that the guy last night hadn't blocked my card. Susposedly, she's taken care of it now. She listed off my recent charges (which the system had already made me listen to, twice). The ones I had made, I said I had made. When she got to the $265, I said, "That's the one I didn't make." I'm feeling pretty down and I didn't sleep well last night, so I guess I wasn't speaking very loudly, but the next thing I know she's yelling, "HELLO? ARE YOU THERE?" I said I was and she was like, "Well, did you make that charge?" I said, "I said that I didn't." She said, "Well, I didn't hear you say anything." Oh well, at least it should be taken care of now.

So, I have all new credit cards and debit cards coming in the mail. I stopped by this morning (my boss let me leave work, which was nice of her) and picked up the police report, so that I could go and get a new driver's license with a new number (so someone else can't get me speeding tickets!). I forced myself to smile for the photo, so I look really freaky in the picture, like I'm pretending to be super excited about something.

I have to remember who I need to give my new driver's license number to... vehicle registration and my car insurance, I think. Then I need to buy a new wallet to put all my new cards into. So crazy. I have to think back to all the things I had in my wallet. My 10% off at Target, I had been saving, which the thief probably used! How dare he! $20 certificate at Mellow Mushroom. Todd called them and asked them to tell us if someone tries to use it. Ha! Anyway, I'm too tired to think very clearly, so hopefully this post makes sense.

I am an alien

So, I think Christy wrote a post about this once, but, you know, I'm original like that.

A lady was talking to me today in the library. She was a very nice lady and she was talking about interesting things, but I felt super awkward. Some of the time my eyes were kind of glazing over as I thought about the awkwardness. She kept on touching my arm and thanking me. I thought, that's nice for her, she's a touchy person. Then, she tried to give me a hug. So, so weird. Nice lady, I am sorry that I had to treat you like a serial killer when you tried to give me a hug. That's just not the way I roll. Insert awkward laugh.

A lot of people do that casual arm touch. I've actually caught myself doing it with one of my sisters once of twice. I'm like, "Wow, where did that come from?" It doesn't make me feel less alien-like, though, because I don't think I quite pull it off. When people do it to me, I think I kind of wince.

It's not just touchy feely stuff that makes me an alien, either. There is this careful balance between saying what's on my mind or keeping it to myself. If I start thinking about it too much, soon I've overthought it, and it's too late to say anything, or it comes out really forced. But, if I don't think about it enough, I end up just blurting something out. "I like your pants," I say in a strangely overexhuberant voice, even as I realize that I do not, in fact, like those pants. I start talking in weird self-referential circles. Commenting on the words I'm using or making fun of the fact that I misspoke without actually finishing a single thought. I can feel that I'm losing the attention of the person I'm speaking to. They don't know what the heck I'm talking about. "What's with this girl?" they're thinking. It's not that I can't pick up on social cues as much as I can't follow along with them.

Some days I get an overload of alien situations. Then, I just want to go home and go back to bed, or take a shower and wash it all away. Alien situations create more alien situations, because people who feel like aliens act like aliens. You really need to start over fresh in order to break the cycle. Now, I know my fellow aliens will sympathize with this post. Everyone else will just think it's weird.

Political Post

I just read some discussion about healthcare, and I am annoyed. I can't get it out of my head, so here I am writing a blog about it, even though I try to avoid such things.

It is frustrating to me, because there is so much hypocrisy about it. I can understand people being against the specifics of the healthcare plan, or certain aspects, but people seem to be opposed to the very idea. These are so very often the same people who are radically Pro-Life and who have 9/11 tattooed on their biceps. I don't understand. The United States has the highest infant mortality rate of any civilized country. Do the babies not matter after they are born? Three thousand Americans died on 9/11, but more Americans than that die because they can't afford proper heathcare. Isn't it also important to do something about those lives?

There is the matter of money, but money is already being spent. If a person develops a cough, but can't afford to go to the Dr., they wait. They wait until it is so bad that they have to go to the Emergency Room. By that time, something that might have been very easy and cheap to treat may have developed into something that requires time spent in the hospital and more expensive treatments. Most of these people cannot afford to pay their bills, so the costs are passed along to everyone else. In addition, the person has come in contact and spread their germs to many other people. Without regular check-ups, many conditions go longer without being treated. Preventable health problems are not prevented. These people are not locked away in some ghetto. They are spreading infectious diseases to you and me. And more money is spent.

Yes, it costs money, but whether you support the bailouts or you support the huge military budget we have, we are spending money. It is a matter of priorities. I eat a lot of organic food and people always tell me that they can't afford to eat that way. But, unlike me, most of these people have cable, buy new clothes regularly, spend money on expensive beauty products, and go out to eat or see movies on a regular basis. It is about priorities. And right now, there are people with money who see first class doctors. They know that changing the system may mean that their care is slightly diminished. It is not a priority to them, because all they see is what they have to give up. And they are the ones framing the conversation, so it becomes about how the people who are sick aren't worth anything anyways-illegal immigrants, lazy people, undeserving people- or about how it can't work, it won't work, it will ruin America.

All I can say is, Americans are sick and they are dying of preventable diseases. Where is the outrage?

How do I appease the Fire God

So, it is clear that I did something to make the Fire God mad at me. Last night I made soup. I guess I made it hotter than I meant to, because as I sat down on the couch, the bowl touched my chest just above my neckline. My very natural reaction was to yank the hot thing away from my chest, which caused soup to spill all over my hands, which caused me to spill soup all over my lap, which caused me to fling the remainder of the bowl of soup onto the floor, leap up, and start trying to pull off my burning pants. After a few minutes in a cold shower, the only thing that still hurt was my thumb, but it hurt really badly. It's better today, but I didn't sleep very well, and now I just want to know "why." Why am I always burning myself? Is it related to me burning down the apartment? What did I do? And how do I make the Fire God like me again?

(P.S. Thank God for Todd. He cleaned up all the mess, helped me cool my burns, and made me pizza for dinner, which he wouldn't let me touch until it had sufficiently cooled down.)

Slacker

I am a slacker. I know. I still haven't put up pictures of when Christy and the boys came for a visit. I can't even remember if I got them on the computer yet (on the home computer- I'm on a break at work right now- not quite that lazy).

I do have the excuse that my laptop royally crashed. Todd bought us a nice new one, but then we had Internet issues. AT&T declared my modem defunct as soon as I gave them the serial number, and it took a week for the new one they sent to arrive. See? Excuses.

Life has been "interesting" lately, too. Work drama, no details given here. Bleh. Then there was the subpoena for the child custody case. It seemed like a kind of exciting experience in theory, but was not very fun in practice. I sat in for the end of another person's divorce hearing, and it was depressing. It made me feel guilty listening to someone else's private affairs, too. The case I was involved in was really strange. I went in, gave my testimony and left. I have no idea how the case was decided, and I don't know if I helped or hurt the guy who called me. The thing about testifying in court is, you can't really be helpful and likeable, like I like to be. You are helping one person and hurting the other with almost everything you say. Especially in this case, because I have no idea what the bigger picture is.

In other news, Todd and I have been discussing the where of the whole wedding thing. So far, we have decided against his home town church, against anywhere that would be too far for his family to travel, and against a few other places. I don't know where that leaves us. I think Todd is still hoping I'll give in and just elope.

Anyway, my break is over, so that's all for now!

I'm engaged

So, if you don't already know, I'm officially engaged now. Sorry to not call/tell everyone individually, but that gives me anxiety. Family members, feel free to share with oher family members who might not see my blog.

Anyway, Todd and I have been together for 7 years now, and we decided it was time to go ahead and get married. Shocking, I know. We decided to do it a few weeks ago and I went ahead and told Mom and Dad, but I felt weird telling people about it until we had a ring. I don't know why, I guess I'm a weirdo. I still feel weird about telling people, which is why I'm doing it electronically. :)

Anyway, we picked out a ring that I really like and that Todd likes, too. He was pickier about it than I expected him to be, but that's cool. I'm not a huge fan of diamonds, so we went with an aquamarine stone. Believe it or not, it's actually really hard to take a picture of a ring, so I hope that these ones will do. The one on the website we ordered it from was much better, but I guess this was the last one they had in stock, because right after we ordered it, it disappeared from their website.

Anyway, today I went and had the ring resized. I had called a local place earlier in the day and got an estimate for how much it would cost. The guy seemed like he knew what he was talking about and said he'd been in the business for 28 years, so I decided he was as good a person to go to as anyone. I was really shocked when I went into the place, because it had all the usual display cases, but they were all empty. At the back of the display area there was a big open space with a concrete floor and a cluttered workbench, various tools, etc. I was kinda laughing at how weird it was when the owner, who was kinda hairy and greasy, acknowledged me.

He remembered me from the phone and I kinda thought I was the only person who had called him all day. He still seemed like he knew what he was talking about though, so I gave him the go ahead. When he told me it would be 10 minutes, I kinda wish I had said I would go look around in the store next door, but instead I took a seat. I did notice a case that had some different rings in it (labeled with the names of the designs, sizes, etc), which held my attention for a couple minutes. I decided he must mostly make jewelry by request, but it was still really weird having all those empty cases. He was sitting behind his desk, whirring away with this machine and that one. After awhile he stood up and dunked my ring in some sort of machine to clean it or treat the white gold, I know not. Then, he picked up a gatorade bottle that had water (I think) in it and poured some of that in the machine.

After awhile he got the ring out and, I kid you not, washed it off in a drinking fountain he had back there. He did some more dipping, some more rinsing in the drinking fountain, etc, until he was happy with it.

He did a good job and I would probably go back to him, but that 10 minutes seemed like an eternity. It did make me laugh, though. I don't know what that guy is thinking. He was complaining about the economy and being stuck in America (I'm not sure where he's from, but he did have a thick accent), so I kinda wanted to be like, "you know what might help with that...."

Anyway, Todd and I haven't really discussed any of the details for the wedding yet. We're planning on doing it next summer and it will probably be in Georgia. We'll let you know once we decided the rest!

Nightmares

I'm having a terrible day today. It started off alright. I was working this evening, so I slept in late, had my tea, and did a few things on the computer. I got ready for work and I was feeling pretty good. I had a second cup of tea ready for my drive to work and I was ready to step out the door, running just a touch late, but with enough time to get to work right on time. Only thing left to do was to put a lid on my travel mug. It's a corn "plastic" mug and sometimes the lids are little snug, but they are bendy and fit when forced, so I gave it a big push. Suddenly, there was a loud splash and I was soaking wet. The lid had gone completely into the cup. So, through my tea soaked glasses I found my way to the bathroom, quickly washed off my face and ran a little water in my hair. I had to change my clothes, fix my hair and clean up the counter, floor, and cabinets. I think I did pretty well getting to work 5 minutes late.

Immediately after I got to work I had to go to a big meeting. I won't go into the details here, but for various reasons it was a stressful meeting and by the end of it I felt like crying. I'm doing better now, but I still have to stay here for another 3 hours and I want to go home! My lunch break will be over in 15 minutes and then I'll have to leave my little cocoon of an office and I don't want to!

Anyway, in other news... here are a few reoccuring nightmares I have. Points go to the best dream interpreter.

#1 I've had this dream since I was about 10. I am behind the wheel of a car and I don't know how to drive very well. I am careening around and out of control. I really lose control and end up hitting something. For years I thought the dream would go away once I actually learned how to drive, but it didn't. I've had this dream so many times that sometimes I forget that I've only had one at fault accident, and it was just a minor fender bender.

#2 I am eating meat. Either it looks good to me and I go ahead and eat it even though I know I am a vegetarian or I'm just really unaware of what I'm doing. Afterwards I have the same kind of "what have I done" feeling a normal person would have in a dream where they just ate their best friend. This dream totally confuses me sometimes. I have to think back and remember that there are a few times I have accidentally had a mouthful of meat and several times I have accidentally had some meat byproducts in this thing or that thing, but I really haven't ever "slipped" up and ate meat. Not once in 13 years.

#3 I started having this dream very soon after I started working at a library. It is closing time. Sometimes I'm at a weird library and sometimes its my own library. We make our announcements and people start leaving, but there are a few people who just aren't budging. Then, some sort of forgotten side door opens up and people are pouring in. I get one person to leave, but they seem to be replaced by three new people. I am going around to everyone I can see and telling them, "We're closed, that open door was a mistake. Really, you have to leave." But there are always new people. The library seems to expand as the dream goes on, with more and more nooks and crannies with people in them. It will be two o'clock in the morning, but I still can't get the people to leave.

And there you have it. Thoughts, anyone?

It Happened Again

(With teary eyes) I'm sorry, but we can't find the book about Outdoor Fireplaces that said it's supposed to be here. Can I interest in you in Google Images?

I feel confused.

Darn my teary eyes!

I have an issue with my eyes. They are prone to get teary with hardly any prompting. It happens most often when I'm talking to my employees at work and it makes me really mad, because it does not strike the professional tone I'm going for. "What, someone creepy made you feel uncomfortable?" I ask with teary eyes. "You shouldn't have to deal with that." Or, "We have a new policy, no more jeans," and my eyes are all a glimmer. "We appreciate your hard work!" and moisture accumulates. It doesn't matter if something doesn't seem like too big of a deal to me. It doesn't matter that there is no need for emotion. All the sudden, I feel my eyeball glisten. I try to pretend like the person I'm talking to can't tell, but, dude, I've seen my face in the mirror before. It is, if anything, overly obvious. Tarnation!

The 6th Challenge

1. Go to the photo folder in your computer
2. Go to the 6th folder of photos.
3. Go to the sixth picture.
4. Put the picture on your blog along with a description of it.
5. Invite six friends to join the challenge (I am tagging anyone who reads this - leave me a comment if you post one on your blog.)

So, here's my picture:
This is a photo of my two sisters, my dad, my stepmom and my half brother. I think it was all the kids living with my dad at the time- 1990-91. I know you are jealous of our awesome hair.

(Three Months after injury)

These are my "major" burns, and do not include a variety of minor burns I have received in the last 6 months. Yes, I do think there is something wrong with me. If I was superhero, I think this would be my fatal weakness.

The Pictures

Exhibit A: The Flowers
Here are the beautiful Tulips Todd gave me.
Here is a close up, so you can further enjoy them.
Exhibit B: The Camera
This is what I saw when I turned my camera on. At first I thought Todd had taken a picture of one of his artworks.

Here is a closeup, so you can get a little bit more of an idea about what happened.

Exhibit C: The Scarf
Here I am doing a fancy model pose with my scarf on. I know you are jealous of how well it matches my outfit.
Please admire my beautiful stitches.

A little bit of this and a little bit of that

So, carrying your camera with you everywhere has a price, and that price is that something sharp breaks the viewfinder because you don't keep your camera in a case, you fool. I decided that while the damage might be repairable, it would probably cost almost as much as buying a new camera (and protective carrying case), so that's what I did. It is almost exactly like my old camera, but has more megapixels (due to the advancements of time.) I will take a picture of my fancy broken screen sometime when I feel like it. Until then, you must wait!

For Valentine's Day, Todd and I decided to pull our money and start saving to buy a video camera. Both of us think it would be fun to make our own weird movies, so, it seemed like the best way to afford it. Of course, Todd couldn't help but surprise me by buying me flowers. They were really pretty tulips. I'll get a picture of them up at some point. Unfortunately, I have a little bit of a bug, so we mostly just hung out at home and I just whined about not feeling good most of the day. Besides that it was a good day. :)

Last month, mom taught me how to knit, and I've been working on a scarf. I'm almost done with it, which is pretty cool. Once I finish it, I'll take a picture of me modeling it for your enjoyment. I'll have to do a whole complement post to this one that includes all the pictures I'm not inserting now. It will be fancy, just wait and see.

Geocaching

My dad is into something called "Geocaching." You use a GPS to search for little "caches" that people have hidden all around the place. It was actually pretty fun. I might think about getting a GPS and trying it out myself sometime when I have a little extra money.
Here is a picture of a strange elfen creature we came across as we searched the woods: Another angle of the same creature:
Just for fun, here is a picture of the magnificent and beautiful Jenny, who helped us on our quest. I wonder what she is taking a picture of?

Things I found in the library

Sometimes, I find random things when I wander around the library. Here are a few of the ones I liked enough to put on my bulletin board at work. Perhaps I am a weirdo.

Little people. I'm not sure what's up with the purple lady. My guess is that she came from some sort of fast food kids meal. The little orange striped pajama guy is one of my favorites. He kinda reminds me of my nephew Joe. Not because Joe looks like that, but because Joe draws little pictures and cuts them out for elaborate games he invents.

I normally try to block out names and phone numbers and such things when I post images on my blog, but I really have no idea what that word following "I love you" is. Who was this note meant for? I like to think it was meant for me and my library. See the note below.

Isn't that nice?

Not as nice. I really can't imagine the purpose of this note. Also, since it doesn't appear to have been delivered, does Aunt Phyllis know her fate yet?

Now, this is what makes it all worthwhile.

Eyebrow Threading

Christy and Jenny sometimes go and get their eyebrows "threaded." It's an Indian alternative to plucking the hairs out. They roll the thead up in this weird way and pull out the hairs. It's about the same amount of pain as plucking hairs, but faster, because they can pull out a lot of hairs at once. It's also more thorough, getting even the tiniest hairs, and they can create really straight lines. I've gone with Jenny and Christy a couple of times. The most recent time we went, I told the lady that I had plucked my eyebrows recently "so, just do what you can." She said, "Alright, I'll see what I can do. But don't do that again!" Below are our before and after pictures. Unfortunately, only some of the pictures are clearly focused, so you don't really get a clear before and after picture. Oh well. Enjoy, anyway.

Pictures I took for people, but have kept to myself for ages

I usually try to keep my camera with me at all times. There have been enough times when I wished I had a camera, but didn't, that it seems like a good idea. Anyway, sometimes I take pictures for other people, but, the thing is, I don't really upload my pictures very often. Here are a couple pictures I took for other people, but never shared with them.

This is the fancy car my nephew Joe built out of pretzels and marshmallows. He built it at his school Christmas party, but he had to dismantle it to bring it home, so I took this picture for posterity. I think Joe is a genius.

Here's another angle so you can admire his craftmanship.

This is Thanksgiving dinner. My stepdad cooked a cornocopia of delicious food. I think he wanted this picture like the day after Thanksgiving so he could post it on his blog. Sorry!
